Craig caught some heat earlier this month when he began to connect some hypothetical dots between the 49ers and Aaron Rodgers, and now, as Tiki Barber sounds the alarm for the Jets amid reports that the Niners are shopping Trey Lance, Craig wants to take a bit of a victory lap.
“What if Craigie’s right?” Craig said. “What if I was right? As much as it would pain me as a Jet fan for this thing to blow up, there is a part of me, being the only guy in America that suggested that San Francisco was interested in Aaron and had talked to Green Bay about Aaron Rodgers, and that story went viral.
“Aaron Rodgers is aware of it. San Fran is aware of it. Green Bay is aware of it. Obviously, the Jets clearly know about it and everybody said, ‘Oh, he's not an insider. What does he know?’ But if you're San Francisco and I could take a run at it with that talent and Aaron is my quarterback?”
The reports could simply be because the 49ers believe in Brock Purdy as their future quarterback, though Purdy missing extended time after his injury in the NFC title game could open the door for San Francisco to seek a strong fill-in for next season, and what better stopgap than a future Hall of Famer?
“All of a sudden, little pieces of the puzzle start falling into place,” Craig said. “The next piece you may see happening, I would not be surprised, if San Francisco starts restructuring some contracts.”
