Daniel Jones focused on neck rehab, on-field improvement amidst Giants' staff uncertainty

Joe Judge’s job as Giants head coach is reportedly safe despite the official announcement of GM Dave Gettleman’s retirement Monday – but maybe not.

Judge hadn’t addressed the media as of the end of the Giants’ Monday media availability, nor did he even meet with team ownership until late in the day, so rumors are going to keep swirling for a while, it seems.

And quarterback Daniel Jones, who addressed the media for the first time in a while on Monday, isn’t worried about the speculation.

“You always hear the speculation and that’s part of the NFL, but that’s none of our jobs. Our job now is to get better and improve as a team," Jones said. “It’s our job as players to come to work and there’s no secret we know we got to play better. We know this team certainly expected to win more games and there’s a lot of work to be done. That’s our focus, that’s my focus going into the offseason.”

Two years ago, new head coach Judge and undisputed starting QB Jones were pinned to hopefully become a long-term duo in New York, the former a protégé of Bill Belichick and the latter, while not necessarily Tom Brady, a protégé of the same lineage as his predecessor, Eli Manning.

Now 24 months later, both are on hot seats, but the QB has already learned a lot from the man he isn’t 100 percent sure will be his head coach tomorrow or any time down the road.

“I’ve got a great relationship with Joe and have learned a lot from him about the game, and we’ll continue to work and continue to grow in our communication,” Jones said. “Obviously, he’s overseeing everything, so we work together a lot on bigger picture things and learned a lot from him. I look forward to building this thing and winning more games.”

Regardless of Judge’s feelings, though, the retirement of Gettleman means the Giants will have a new general manager, which could complicate things depending on who gets the job.

“Obviously tough to see him go, because he’s the guy who gave me this opportunity, so I’ll forever be grateful to him for that,” Jones said of Gettleman. “I think the world of him as a guy and thought he did a good job. I certainly wish him the best going forward, and I’m grateful for him and what he’s done for me.”

And, they’re likely to have another new offensive system – what would be Jones’ third in four years – with whomever replaces Jason Garrett as offensive coordinator long-term, but again, Danny Dimes isn’t sweating the chaos.

“That’s all speculation at this point, because no decisions have been made,” Jones said, “but I think every year is different. I think the offense will look different every year anyway – it looked different after Jason left – and you’re always learning and adapting, which is part of the game.”
