There are surely many of you reading this that have a collection of ticket stubs, be it large or small, from events you have attended. Whether it be saving everything (so people know you’ve seen your favorite band 13 times) or only big events (gotta keep that stub from Cone’s perfecto, Johan’s no-no, or Game 5 in 2000!), there’s a literal paper trail many keep to remember.
But, did you know that there may actually be a market for those who want to get rid of those pesky stubs by turning them into graded memorabilia?
On Friday, Yankees opening day, super fan Dan in Carteret called in to Boomer & Gio to talk about his ticket stub collection (which surely also includes every receipt for Al’s Boring Beer), and then the Booms talked about how he has credentials and boards from big Super Bowls or other events he’s covered.
That led to the maven of sports minutia, Darren Rovell, to call in to the show with some news: there are now companies that will actually grade and authenticate ticket stubs, credentials, and other things like that to be turned into a profit on the secondary market - something he has gotten into.
“On April 8, 1989, Jim Abbott made his MLB debut. At the time I was 10, and to me, it was like, ‘Wow, if a guy with one hand can make it to the major leagues, I can do anything,’ so I got the ticket stub to Jim Abbott’s debut,” Rovell explained on a personal tip. “Cards don’t have moments like that, plus the ticket was inside the stadium, it was witness to the moment.”
MLB is finally back! Click here to grab all the newest Mets and Yankees merch and game tickets right now to get in on the action.
Rovell also revealed that he has one of only two ticket stubs in the world remaining (apparently) from the first game where Michael Jordan wore Air Jordan sneakers, a ticket from the Reggie Miller/Spike Lee “choke game,” and two of the three remaining tix from the game Reggie scored eight points in nine seconds.
Apparently, this is only getting bigger, especially in the era of paperless and electronic ticketing becoming more prevalent – take a listen to Rovell’s entire call-in about ticket stubs and memorabilia to learn something today!
