Is Denzel Mims' chance with Jets running out after brutal penalties on Sunday?

With Elijah Moore and Corey Davis both on injured reserve, Jets fans were excited to see Denzel Mims have a chance to prove himself as a dynamic receiver.

Instead, he seemed to push himself farther out of the picture moving forward.

Mims, who has struggled to find consistent playing time this season, headlined a dreadful final drive for Gang Green at the close of the first half, committing two penalties to stall a promising march down the field and significantly impacted the Jets’ chances to find the end zone and tie the game.

New York was able to sneak in a 46-yard field goal as time expired and went to the locker room down 10-6, but Mims nearly forced the Jets to settle for nothing.

With 31 seconds to go in the half, an incomplete pass by Zach Wilson ended with a flag on the field, which was called on Mims, on the opposite side of the field. He was whistled for an illegal hands to the face call, pushing the Jets back from the 24 to the 34-yard line. On the next play, Wilson hit Braxton Berrios for a quick 9-yard completion, but that was negated when Mims was flagged for an illegal formation, backing New York up to the 39-yard line.

Mims, a 2020 second-round pick, was sidelined early in the season with what head coach Robert Saleh called playing catch-up from the stomach virus he battled in training camp. He found more playing time when Davis was first injured earlier in the season, but failed to make an impact. Heading into Sunday’s action, he had just eight receptions for 133 yards in seven games.

Mims wasn’t the only culprit in the final drive of the first half. Saleh left a timeout on the board when halftime hit, potentially losing the chance for an extra play or an extra shot at the end zone.
