Derek Dietrich was in the Yankees’ lineup for Friday’s spring training game, but was scratched shortly after, indicating that the veteran may have opted out of his deal.

Dietrich had 48 hours from Thursday to decide whether to remain with the team or exercise his opt-out after he was a non-roster invite to spring training. The 31-year-old had four hits in 24 at-bats, including one home run, in spring training.

The Yankees saw Dietrich as a potential utility man, as he has played every position but shortstop and center field over the past three seasons. In the shortened 2020 campaign, Dietrich had just 12 hits in 61 at-bats.

Aaron Boone told reporters on Friday morning that no decisions had been made regarding Dietrich and other potential opt-outs like Jay Bruce, and Dietrich was then slotted to play first base on Friday. He was replaced by Chris Gittens.

If Dietrich is gone, it could mean Tyler Wade as secured a bench spot for Opening Day.
