Sal and Tiki are convinced the Mets will be sellers at the trade deadline, believing their chances to be pretty much done of making a run toward a playoff spot, but Tiki raises one issue:
Do the Mets even have pieces that they can sell to get anything meaningful back in return?
"The Mets are selling. They are definitely gonna sell," Tiki said. "Steve Cohen intimated that a few weeks ago when he spoke…but it's hard to sell some of their players right now. I think Verlander is probably the best of the bunch, but his contract is no onerous, I don't know if teams are gonna say, 'Yeah, I'll take $43 million next year, and a performance option that makes it a third year.'
"Scherzer…you can't stomach that…you can't eat that if you're the Mets. I think there's really only one player you can trade, unless Tommy Pham is healthy with his groin injury."
Pham had been one of the best bats in an otherwise struggling Mets lineup this season, but he has logged just four at-bats since injuring his groin on July 9, as he sat in Sunday's series finale and logged one pinch hit plate appearance on Saturday. The Mets could be assuring Pham will be healthy, and, as a result, tradeable, but Sal believes there will be other trade chips.
"Some of the bullpen guys, David Robertson…in the lineup, there is not many viable options," Sal said. "But once the trade deadline comes and goes, they're irrelevant. It's all about next year."
