The nominees for the 2021 Pulse of the People Award were revealed on Friday’s Carton & Roberts Show, and for the first time since Year 1, all of the nominees were first-timers. And, in a nice boost for WFAN, even though Craig wasn’t eligible, WFAN has a 50 percent chance (really four out of seven) of bringing home the hardware.
Why four out of seven with only six nominees? Because the first one(s) up…AL DUKES & JERRY RECCO!
“This is awesome!” Al said when he joined Craig & Evan to accept. “Is this the first time it has been two people? Whatever. I think I’m a little more pulse-y than Jerry, but it’s nice to be nominated. Year after year I’ve never even sniffed a nomination!”
The next nominees announced as Knicks and Rangers owner James Dolan and Mets owner Steve Cohen, but then, the bomb was dropped, as the next nominee was…GREGG GIANNOTTI!
“Gio deserved it, especially over Boomer,” Evan said, to which Craig replied: “He once tipped 10 percent, big day for him!”
Craig was hoping the two morning nominations would create some tension between the morning show crew, but it was soon revealed who he’d be rooting for…because nominee No. 5 is EVAN ROBERTS!
“I’m deeply honored by this,” Evan “The Ginger” Roberts (the announcement’s words, not ours) said. “Once I heard ‘the only sports talk host who goes to games,’ I knew it was me, and the insults were coming, but I’m honored.”
And let’s get one more for the FAN extended family, because the final nominee is…MATTY MARTS!
“I can’t compete against a guy on my hockey team,” Evan exclaimed, which brought two-time winner Boomer Esiason himself onto the hotline!
“It’s so exciting for my household, I can’t even control myself,” the Booms said. “Given the fact those nominations were so insulting, I’m glad to say I wasn’t nominated!”
Boomer then said Evan had ‘no chance to win’ because this is the ‘year of Gio’ – which brought Evan to ask about Matty Marts: “If they go out and win the Stanley Cup, I’m sure Craig will give it to him so he can hang out with a Stanley Cup-winning athlete!”
Evan admitted he doesn’t think he’s a front-runner, so who are his two favorites?
“I think it’s Gio or Matt Martin,” Evan said. “I lean towards Matt as an active athlete, with a chance to win a championship, who has a family relation to this radio station…as a matter of fact, like a candidate pulling out of the race, I am endorsing Matt Martin, and the committee can stick it!”
A BOOMPA SHOWDOWN! And probably a good thing, because Craig admitted that if he had a vote, he might actually vote for Jerry & Al.
Unfortunately, nobody knows who votes for this, not even six-time winner Craig Carton, so we’ll have to wait until later this summer to see who it actually is. Until then, you have to hear the Pulse of the People Award nominations yourself just to hear exactly what the guys are talking about – so check out the video below of the announcement!
