Evan: Kirk Cousins is new candidate to replace Daniel Jones as Giants quarterback

In taking Malik Nabers with the sixth overall pick on Thursday night, Joe Schoen made it known that the Giants wouldn’t reach for a quarterback just because they may need one.

But Evan says Jones’ days are officially numbered in New York, as the Giants reportedly looked to trade up for Drake Maye before taking Nabers. However, it likely won’t be a draft pick replacing Jones. Now, it will more than likely be a veteran, and Evan says a new name has been added to the list of candidates.

“I think, two days ago, the most obvious names were Dak Prescott and Jared Goff,” Evan said. :The writing is on the wall. Daniel Jones may be the guy this season…but the Giants are looking for a quarterback next year, and it’s probably of the veteran persuasion.

“Get used to hearing about Dak Prescott, and now, get ready to start hearing about Kirk Cousins.”

Cousins, who just signed with the Falcons, was reportedly stunned, like much of the NFL world, when Atlanta took Michael Penix Jr. with the eighth overall pick on Thursday. Cousins, who signed a $180 million contract with the Falcons after his final season in Minnesota ended with an Achilles injury, suddenly feels like a stopgap in Atlanta, and Evan says it could make him a potential replacement for Daniel Jones.

“Here’s the reality: we’re all idiots,” Evan said. “We didn’t realize that the Falcons can trade him at any point, and it’s not a massive cap hit for them…the Falcons announced to the world that with Kirk Cousins, it’s a one-night stand.”
