n a heated debate with C-Mac, Evan couldn’t get over the fact that Hal Steinbrenner saying he would ask “tough questions” to his front office if a healthy Yankee team missed the playoffs would be seen as inspiring.

After all, those conversations should have happened after getting swept by the Astros in the ALCS, or pounded by the rival Red Sox in the 2021 American League Wild Card Game.

“There were no tough questions last year?” Evan said. “I’m gonna ask tough questions? He didn’t ask tough questions when they got embarrassed by the Red Sox in the Wild Card Game? I’m upset that now it would take that to even ask a tough question. That’s embarrassing. What kind of leadership is that?

“That’s pathetic. Didn’t ask a tough question after losing in the Wild Card Game?”

C-Mac noted that it was the first time Steinbrenner had publicly said he would examine Aaron Boone or Brian Cashman’s standing within the organization if certain events unfolded, but Evan pointed out Steinbrenner noting that he would ask the tough questions if the Yanks both missed the playoffs and were nearly 90 percent healthy, which is hardly setting a lofty expectation.

“You’re telling me you’re excited that the owner is going to ask a tough question, when tough questions should have been asked after ’20, ’21, and ’22,” Evan said. “Guess what guys. If there are no injuries, and we don’t win, ‘I’m gonna bring Brian in a room and ask him a tough question.’ That’s pathetic.”
