Evan: Time to find out if this Mets team has 'stones' after Austin Adams mocked OMG celebration
During the Mets' 9-4 loss to the A's on Tuesday night, Austin Adams mocked New York's OMG celebration after striking out Francisco Alvarez to end the fifth inning, and had some expletives for Alvarez as he made his way back to the dugout.
Evan didn't have a problem with Adams celebrating, at least until he heard Edwin Diaz after the game admit that he didn't care for the celebration.
"Last night serves as something that is gonna tell us a lot about the guts and the stone of the New York Mets," Evan said. "Not only do they need to win from a standings perspective - Austin Adams…came in and got three big outs, including two strikeouts. Austin Adams stood up and starting prancing his hands in the air, mocking what the Mets do with OMG.
"After the game, Edwin Diaz said 'He crossed a line.' Edwin Diaz, a veteran on this team…the Mets think h [crossed a line]. Don't you think he speaks for the team?"
The Mets were often criticized for not retaliating under Buck Showalter, even when the team was leading the league in HBPs, and while Evan isn't calling for an A's player to get hit, he still believes this is a chance for New York to send a message.
"What are you gonna do about it?" Evan said. "You've got the Mets in desperate need of a victory…but now you have a key player saying 'Yeah, that pissed us off.' One of the big knocks on this Mets team is when are they gonna show stones?
"We're gonna find out if this team has stones. Go out and smack them, and dance all over their grave."
