Geno Smith played for both New York football teams, although his one-year tenure with the Giants was much less controversial than his time with the Jets…minus that whole “being the guy that ended Eli Manning’s streak” thing.
So, Sunday wasn’t a revenge game for Smith, in his first season as the Seahawks’ starter after serving as Russell Wilson’s backup for three years – in fact, he’s grateful to his former coach and GM with Big Blue for his second chance way back in 2017, perhaps adding insult to the injury of Seattle's victory over Big Blue by shouting them out postgame.
“I'm happy to be here in Seattle. I spent one year with the Giants, and that year, to me, was like a blur. And my life has moved on from then,” Smith said after Seattle’s 27-13 win Sunday. “I don't have any remorse towards anyone there. In fact, this, to me, this game is for Ben McAdoo and Jerry Reese. They believed in me.”
Smith signed a one-year deal with the Giants in 2017 to back up Eli Manning, and on December 3 of that season, he got the start against the Raiders, ending Manning’s streak of 210 consecutive games started…for one week, as the Raiders beat the Giants 24-17, McAdoo and Reese were fired on Dec. 4, and Manning started the rest of the way.
Smith went on to spend one year with the Chargers and is now in year four in Seattle, where he has been one of the highest-rated quarterbacks in the NFL en route to the Seahawks’ 5-3 record.
“I'm happy to be here in Seattle. It's like a family here. It feels like home. So I'm just enjoying my time here and continuing to work hard with these guys and just trying to be the best we can be,” he said.
Smith was 23-of-34 for 212 yards and two touchdowns on Sunday, and he has 1,924 yards and 13 touchdowns on the year for the NFC West-leading Seahawks.
