Gerrit Cole hilariously signals pass interference on his own teammate

Training camp has just begun for NFL teams, and Gerrit Cole already seems ready for football season.

With the Yankees holding a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second in the second game of a four-game set with the White Sox, Cole forced Colson Montgomery into a weak pop-up in front of the mound. Cole called off catcher Austin Wells as he settled under the ball, but before Wells could abandon his pursuit, he bumped into his battery mate, sending Cole backwards as the ball bounced off his glove. Cole was still able to secure the out with his bare hand as he stumbled near the rubber, retiring Montgomery on an eventful infield pop fly.

Cole looked towards Wells after the bump, and gave him a signal indicating pass interference on his own teammate. The clip made its rounds on social media, just in time for football season.

The light collision with Wells did not slow down Cole, as he tossed six shutout innings and struck out seven, continuing his uptick as he moves further past his return from Tommy John surgery. The Yankees held on to win 3-2, taking the first two games of the series and moving within 1.5 games of the first-place Rays in the AL East.
