The Giants have dropped the dime, and it’s Cutlets time.
Per reports, the Giants are benching Daniel Jones and installing Tommy DeVito as quarterback, a move Brian Daboll and Joe Schoen foreshadowed during the bye week and probably means the beginning of the end of Jones in New York.
DeVito will lead the 2-8 Giants as they face Tampa Bay at MetLife Stadium on Sunday, starting over Drew Lock, who signed a one-year, $5 million deal this past offseason to be a backup to Jones and has 23 career starts.
Lock has actually played in two games this season, although his Week 2 appearance was one snap as a holder after Graham Gano was hurt and Jamie Gillan was forced to attempt a PAT. His lone game under center was the Week 7 blowout loss to Philly, where he played the entire fourth quarter and was 3-for-8 for six yards and had one 13-yard rush.
DeVito has not seen action, but was 3-3 as a starter for the Giants last season, and completed 64 percent of his passes for 1,101 yards, with eight TD versus three INT, in nine games overall.
Either one is hoped to be an upgrade over Jones, who has struggled all year in leading the Giants to the lowest scoring total in the league this season at 15.6 points per game and has thrown 13 interceptions to 10 touchdown passes this year.
There is perhaps contractual precedent for both Jones and Lock not starting and going with DeVito, as well; Jones has a $23 million injury clause in his contract that becomes fully guaranteed if he gets injured and is unable to pass a physical in the offseason, and Lock’s contract contains $3 million in performance incentives, at least half of which are obtainable at this point.
