Of the multitude of injuries the Giants suffered Sunday, the biggest one on offense was wide receiver Wan’Dale Robinson, who was having a career day with nine catches for 100 yards before going down in the fourth quarter with a knee injury.
Head coach Brian Daboll admitted Robinson looked to be in “a lot of pain” but he had no specifics and wasn’t sure how serious the injury might be.
Unfortunately, though, Daboll almost sounded desensitized by the time he was asked about Robinson, after also seeing defensive backfield starters Adoree’ Jackson and Fabian Moreau, among others, also go down on Sunday.
“You never want to see anybody go down, but that's the nature of the NFL. There's injuries every game. You feel bad for the guys that do go out, but you got to get ready to play.”
“Everybody that played this week played last week,” added Dexter Lawrence of injuries in general. “We just got to be more tuned in on our keys and doing our job.”
The secondary is very thin right now, but wideout may be the one place Big Blue can ill afford anymore injuries, given their depth chart and some of those on it who aren’t performing.
So, seeing Wan’Dale go down, especially in the midst of a breakout game, was one more gut punch in a game full of them for Big Blue.
“Tough to see him go down. I thought he played really well today, made some really big plays for us throughout the game. To see him go down like that is tough and feel for him,” Daniel Jones said. “We all got his back and supporting him for sure.”
“It’s part of the game, sadly, bur any time you see one of your brothers go down, it's not a good feeling,” added Saquon Barkley. “We know how explosive he can be. We know the plays that he can make, so, I don’t know the extent of the injury but not having him out there is definitely going to be a loss.”
And there was, admittedly, a mental toll, as well, as the injuries piled up.
“There was a lot, but to be honest, you really don't realize it until after the game. You're so caught up in the game, but then you find out that guys are going down, but that's the NFL,” Barkley said. “There's got to be a next man up mentality, but the guys that went down and for a guy like Wan'Dale who's young, who's got a young career and still a bright future, you know he's having a heck of a day and all the other guys, you know, you've just got to keep your head up and we've got to make sure we rally around them and support them.”
That’s what the Giants will do, and both Jones and Barkley are confident the rest of the offense will step up if Robinson has to miss significant time.
“We’ve had guys step up and play well throughout the year, so it won't be any different here,” Jones said, with Barkley adding this: “it will give other guys opportunities, and we have all the confidence in all the other guys, too, to step in and make plays.”
