Quite a bit to digest from the Giants’ 31-18 loss to Detroit, so it’s time to break out the Giants Quotebook for some answers to questions of what went wrong up and down the depth chart Sunday.
Head coach Brian Daboll on starting the returning Shane Lemieux and then sitting him in the second half: “We thought (starting Lemieux) was the best thing to do relative to practice and where we were. We wanted to play (Joshua) Ezeudu at half, get him some reps. I think Shane will work hard, but we talked about it and made the switch there.”
Saquon Barkley on the frustration of the day on offense: “We had a lot of drives where we were driving and had penalties. It was little things. That's what it all comes down to and that's just the theme of today. That's in every win and every loss. You can say that every week. And whatever team executes better and whatever team does the little things better is mostly likely going to come out with the win. You've got to move on.”
Andrew Thomas on climbing out of a three-turnover deficit: “It’s definitely tough. You can't turn the ball over in this league. It's definitely hard, especially giving it to an explosive offense like Detroit. They have been scoring 30 points in a lot of their games. We didn't help the defense out at all with that.”
Daboll on what he saw from Kenny Golladay, who had two catches: “He did a good job in practice. We were going to play him, and he made the plays that came his way. So, we'll try to build off that.”
Dexter Lawrence on the difference in this game, a blowout loss, versus the others they’ve been in: “I wouldn't say it was different. They made more plays than us. We kept fighting. Unfortunately, it didn't go our way. It happens. The simple things we got to get corrected. They took advantage of miscommunication, this and that. They're a good team and credit to them. It's good to learn from this so you know how not to let it happen again.”
Julian Love on that same notion: “In all the games before I think we had some stuff going for us. Today, I felt we were getting killed on penalties, turnovers, maybe explosive plays. I'm not sure what their third down numbers were. All those situational things that we've been doing so well at on both sides of the ball, we didn't have that today. It's easy to see what happened and why, because the keys that we focus on that coach harps on – that's the story of the game for us. We got to execute that, and it really comes down to fundamentals at the end of the day. We got to pick this stuff up right now.”
Daboll on Graham Gano missing two PAT: “The first one got blocked, I think, and then there was pressure on the second one, too. Every area, we've got to do a better job of.”
Gano, who missed practice time due to illness this week and needed four IV injections Sunday, on that performance: “I felt terrible, but that’s no excuse. I’ve just got to do a better job. Can’t blame the wind, can’t blame anything really. I just got to put it through. If they send me out there they expect me to make it so it doesn’t really matter how I’m feeling, I just got to come through and make the kick.”
Lawrence on how injuries will affect the defense on a short week, and what they need to do to succeed in Dallas: “Everybody playing their gaps up front, just continue to play hard and just everybody getting to the ball. Guys will be ready. We do a good job getting guys ready to go. Next man up.”
And finally, Love on the defense’s overall performance: “Really, we didn't execute how we needed to. We had too many penalties. We didn't win the turnover battle. Field position on special teams wasn't the best. All around, it just wasn't our day, and it’s just executing. I thought we had good calls. They're an offense who brings a lot at you and they're talented at what they do. I think we just have to be more resilient when we get in those situations, especially in the red zone.”
