A new era is about to begin in East Rutherford.
According to multiple reports, including Ian Rapaport and Mike Garafolo, the Giants are turning to rookie Jaxson Dart as their starting quarterback on Sunday against the undefeated Chargers, as the first-round pick will take over for Russell Wilson.
Per Rapaport and Garafolo, Wilson will take over as the backup and Jameis Winston will remain as the third-string quarterback.
Fans had already been clamoring for Dart to take over as QB1 as Big Blue got off to an 0-3 start. Fans chanted for Dart to play during Sunday night’s loss to the Chiefs, and Wilson heard loud boos in the second half of the 22-9 loss after badly misfiring on three goal-to-go passes, including one that hit the crossbar of the field goal post behind the end zone. Wilson was coming off a monster game against the dreadful Cowboys defense, but Sunday’s dud was the second time this season where he clearly struggled.
Dart, who the Giants traded up for to draft at 25th overall, was a revelation in the preseason, and it showed when New York responded by naming him the backup quarterback before Week 1. He has attempted two passes so far this season, as Brian Daboll has used Dart in certain situations given his threat to run. Now, he will be tasked with running the offense and getting the Giants their first win of the season.
Daboll was noncommittal to Wilson when asked about his quarterbacks on Monday, leading to heightened speculation that Dart was about to be the starter. That is now the reality, and finally, Daboll will have the chance to develop a quarterback he drafted himself, something fans have been waiting for since he was hired prior to the 2022 season.
