The New York Giants have opened up a bit more cap space by re-structuring cornerback Adoree Jackson’s contract.
Per NFL Insider Field Yates, the team has opened up $5.98 million in cap space for 2022 by converting $8.965 million of Jackson’s deal into a signing bonus, and adding a void year.
The Giants were less than $1 million under the cap, even after new GM Joe Schoen had made several cap-casualty moves as part of his plan to shave $40 million off Big Blue’s books – one of which was releasing safety Logan Ryan, who quickly signed with Tampa Bay.
Over The Cap reports that Jackson’s base salary for 2022 is now $1.035 million and his cap hit is $9.288 million, down from $15.2 million – but his 2023 cap hit rises from $15.5 million to $19.488 million – and the void year pushes $2.988 million in pro-rated bonus money into the 2024 season.
Jackson’s original deal, signed last year, was three years at $39 million, but the restructure leaves the Giants with just under $6.8 million in cap space – meaning they still need to make room for their rookie class and any other pre-season or in-season moves.
One of the biggest moves they can make, and something Schoen is still reportedly considering, is dealing their other starting corner, James Bradberry, whose departure would clear $12.136 million of $13.5 million if he is dealt – the former if he is traded before June 1, the latter if he’s dealt after.
