New York football has been dead for months, but Gio is wondering if a Big Apple tie could make an unprecedented mark on Super Bowl Sunday.
What if a former Jets draft bust went on to claim the Big Game’s highest honor?
“Imagine if Brock Purdy got hurt again and Sam Darnold came in and won Super Bowl MVP?” Gio said. “He could do it too. With that offense? And he was not Zach Wilson. He could play a little bit. He even played a little bit with the Panthers. There was a stretch where he didn’t look terrible.”
Darnold, Purdy’s backup, played in San Francisco’s regular season finale and completed 16 of 26 passes for 189 yards and a touchdown. If Purdy had to come out of the game, could Darnold capitalize on the Niners’ plethora of weapons on offense to become the unlikeliest MVP winner?
“He could do it,” Gio said. “Stranger things have happened.”
