As the Jets carry on with their extensive head coaching search, Gio says there is one clear candidate among those that he believes will be among the finalists for the position.
“It has to be Brian Flores over Aaron Glenn,” Gio said. “I need a guy who has been in charge of an organization...I’m not saying Aaron Glenn isn’t a great head coaching candidate - he is - but you cannot have your first job in this place.
“If I were Aaron Glenn, I’d pull a Ben Johnson if the Jets were the only team to offer me a head coaching job. I’d say ‘Eh, I’ll come back next year. I’ll make myself available next season after another year with the Lions.’”
Gio has long maintained that the Jets need to hire an established head coach with experience at the position, and while things didn’t end well for him in Miami, Brian Flores has experience as a head coach in the AFC East, and Gio believes he has to be the top candidate if it comes down to him and a coach like Glenn, who hasn’t yet been a head coach in the NFL.
Boomer is in agreement.
“I feel like he deserves a chance, but I just don't feel like this is the place, even though people are saying - or it has been written in the NFL world - that he would love to coach the Jets, because he has fond memories of when he was here and the success that he had here,” Boomer said.
“It is a huge job. It is a beast of a job. It is not the easiest of jobs to deal with when you are a coordinator that you've never had head coaching experience, and you're going to be in front of the media every single day. You're gonna have to deal with all the things that go on with the Jet internal organizational stuff with Woody and his family and Christopher and everything else, which is not easy.”
