The Mets were trampled by the lowly Pirates on Sunday, completing a sweep that saw New York get outscored 30-4, the worst margin of defeat in a three-game series in team history.
Pittsburgh, a team going nowhere fast yet again, dominated the Mets from beginning to end, capping it off with a 12-1 massacre in Sunday’s series finale.
Ron Darling sounded off on the effort on the SNY broadcast, and by Monday morning, Gio still wasn’t over the series sweep, as he sounded off on the Mets dropping 13 of their last 16 games.
“This was completely unacceptable for a team with a payroll that high and the stars on this team,” Gio said. “You can never get your ass whipped by the Pittsburgh Pirates over a weekend.
“It’s just completely unacceptable if you’re Carlos Mendoza, David Stearns, and Steve Cohen.”
The Mets have tried to stop the bleeding, holding a players-only meeting during the weekend sweep, but Gio says the old baseball cliché “your momentum is only as good as your next day’s starting pitcher” reared its ugly head.
“The Mets can have all their team meetings and Mendoza can get thrown out,” Gio said. “But if Frankie Montas is gonna go out there and pitch like that, they have no chance.”
The Mets turned their season around after hitting rock bottom last year, sparking a run from June on that saw them look like one of the best teams in baseball and reach the NLCS, but Gio says an encore is no guarantee, and time is running out to wake up and salvage this regular season.
“I don’t know that they’re gonna turn it back around anymore,” Gio said.
