Gio: Starting pitching is why Mets won't turn season around

Having lost eight of their last 10 games and sitting four games below .500, Mets fans are still waiting for the team’s hopeful turnaround, or some kind of sign that the group that won 101 games last season is still there.

Gio isn’t holding out much hope, and believes New York will continue to struggle, mainly because of the part of their roster that they committed the most money to over the offseason.

“My biggest reason why I don’t believe the Mets will turn it around is because of the starting pitching,” Gio said. “I think Max Scherzer is cooked, I don’t think Justin Verlander is gonna return to his Cy Young form, I don’t think Kodai Senga is a guy you can trust because he can’t pitch every fifth day. Tylor Megill stinks, David Peterson stinks, and Carlos Carrasco is either really good or really horrible.

“And the offense isn’t good enough to cover up the warts of that.”

Verlander was superb in his last start, but was knocked around in a big start against the Braves the week before, leading Gio to believe that such inconsistencies will likely continue. Meanwhile, the Mets offense, especially without Pete Alonso, hasn’t been able to generate much of anything, and Gio doesn’t see the pitching staff keeping enough runs off the board consistently enough to begin a winning streak.
