Boomer posed the question to Gio during Tuesday’s show: if Zach Wilson is indeed back with the Jets next season, do they keep Mike White as well?
White is an unrestricted free agent after looking like the clear best option for the team, taking the starting job from Wilson before suffering four broken ribs. He believes he can be a consistent starter in the NFL, while the Jets may continue to try and make it work with Wilson after two straight seasons of disappointment.
If Gio were Joe Douglas, he would regretfully move on from White if the team is committed to making it work with Wilson.
“I love Mike White. I would not bring Zach Wilson back, but I’m answering your question hypothetically. I would not bring Mike White back for a couple reasons,” Gio said.
“Number one, he has to have a veteran who is alive behind him as opposed to Joe Flacco, and you eliminate that whole Mike White/Zach Wilson craziness that has gone on in that locker room. If you’re really committed to Zach Wilson, you can’t have the tam that wore the Mike White t-shirts, that same group...I don’t think that would be a good deal.”
The Jets clearly rallied around White when he took the starting job, and Gio says that would only be a distraction for Wilson if he is the starter to begin next season. So, while Gio wouldn’t run it back with Zach in the first place, he says White would have to go if the team wants to give Wilson another shot.
