Ian Eagle, now a voice of the Brooklyn Nets and multiple nationally televised sporting events, knew Steve Somers in his early days at WFAN, back when Eagle began interning with the company.
So of course he had to call in to talk to Steve during Friday’s Final Schmooze, and thank him for the impact he had on him when he was just getting started.
“I first met you when I was an intern in 1989,” Eagle said. “I got hired as a producer in 1990, I started doing updates in 1991…you were the same person to me when I was an intern as you were when I was getting other positions at the station, which shows the true colors of who you are. It doesn’t matter what the other person in the relationship is, what he or she does, what stature they might have. You’re a truly kind soul to everyone you came in contact with.
“That’s part of the reason why you connected with the audience in the way that you did. because you’re authentic, a genuine person, and a great guy. And that’s how you were since day one, from the first day I met you as an intern to now, 35 years later of Schmoozing.”
Who would have thought, after more than 34 years on the air and a friendship that began shortly after that, that it would take until Steve’s Final Schmooze for Eagle to finally learn how to spell Steve’s name!
“You’re a Stephen with a P-H!” he said after Steve cleared up the spelling of his full name. “Look at what we’re unveiling on your final show!”
Maybe more will be unveiled on Monday afternoon, when Steve will say his final goodbyes from 1-2 p.m.
