J.D. Davis won't resume rehab assignment, still not swinging

The Mets have finally begun to see some reinforcements return from the IL, but it doesn't look like one of their best hitters is any closer to coming back.

J.D. Davis, who has been dealing with a finger issue since being put on the IL exactly one month ago, was supposed to begin a rehab assignment on Tuesday, but now has no timetable for when that will happen after experiencing continued discomfort while swinging.

"He's not swinging right now," manager Luis Rojas told reporters before the start of Wednesday's game in Arizona. "We keep treating him. There's still some discomfort there when we try to ramp up. I think it was mentioned that the rehab assignment might have started again yesterday, but it's not going to happen. It's not going to happen in the next couple of days, either."

Davis initially began a rehab assignment on May 18 before being shut down after four games, with a second MRI revealing inflammation in his left hand, causing the discomfort when swinging. He told reporters last week that he would be swinging a bat again this past weekend, but that clearly didn't bring about the desired results.

Davis represents a big offensive loss for the Mets, even with the return of Pete Alonso, as the third baseman was slashing .390/.479/.610 before going down with the injury.

"He's going to get treated and then we will see when we can do that ramp up again where he can start doing some of those things to test the hand," Rojas said.
