Saquon Barkley will have to play under the franchise tag this season or sit out, and while Jerry acknowledges that Barkley’s fate is the new reality for running backs, he says Barkley deserved a better payday.
“I think he deserves more money than the quarterback does,” Jerry said. “I think that’s how important he is. Daniel Jones is really good. I like Daniel Hones. But without that Saquon Barkley type of back, I don’t know how good he really is.”
That will seemingly never happen, as quarterbacks are now given big-time paydays, like Jones just received in the offseason, and top running backs like Barkley, Dalvin Cook, and Josh Jacobs are left seeking more secure contracts. Jerry says there is only one way that will ever change.
“You want it to change? It will change when a team does this to a running back like Barkley, and the next guy coming in isn’t very good,” Jerry said. “Then you sit there and wonder what could have been. Then it happens again and again, and teams realize ‘You know what? We actually do need to value these guys.’
“It stinks to be a running back.”
