The Jets have reportedly taken another step towards securing their star running back long term.

According to multiple reports, New York has placed the franchise tag on Breece Hall, with the expectation that the two sides will agree upon a long-term contract. Per ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter, the franchise tag is a mere “placeholder” until a contract is agreed upon.

Hall and the Jets have been in talks about a deal, and general manager told reporters last week that Hall would be on the team in 2026, whether it be in the form of the franchise tag or a new contract. Per reports, contract talks continue, but an agreement wasn’t likely by Tuesday’s 4:00 deadline, leading the Jets to use the franchise tag.

Under the franchise tag, Hall will make $14.3 million in 2026.

Hall has been one of the Jets’ top offensive threats since he was drafted with the 36th overall pick in 2022. The 24-year-old had his first 1,000-yard season in 2025, making 16 starts for a third straight year while logging four touchdowns and averaging a career-best 66.6 yards per carry. With a steadying offensive line, Hall figures to be a consistent threat out of the backfield for whoever takes over at quarterback next season and beyond.
