Robert Saleh joined Carton and Roberts from Jets camp on Friday, and explained where the situation stands with Denzel Mims and his trade request.
“Denzel has come in this entire offseason and has competed his butt off,” Saleh said. “He’s in much better shape and has a much better grasp of the system. The unfortunate part, but fortunate part for the Jets, is our wide receiver room is pretty deep. You’ve got Corey [Davis], Elijah [Moore], you’ve got Garrett [Wilson], those are our top three, and you throw in [Braxton] Berrios in there too. So he’s not where he wants to be.”
Saleh told reporters on Friday that he wouldn’t say “it’s over” for Mims in New York, and told Craig and Evan that he doesn’t believe his trade request has anything to do with the Jets, moreso the situation.
“I don’t think this represents how he feels about the organization, the coaching staff, his teammates, the locker room,” Saleh said. “I think he just wants to play and wants to be the man.”
What it more comes down to is the fact that Mims feels like he can be a top receiver for an NFL team, and, right now, the Jets don’t agree.
“We’ve had many conversations,” Saleh said. “He’s expressed that he wants to be the guy and be in the top three. You tell him the truth. Right now, Corey and Garrett and Elijah are ahead of him. So his role, he’s got to know the three different spots and be good on [special] teams, and he’s been battling it.”
But Saleh had nothing but praise for Mims in regards to his attitude and effort on Friday.
“He was great,” Saleh said. “He’s been great every day. He was in meetings, sitting up, eye contact…he’s been the same.”
