Joe Benigno: Carlos Mendoza is best Mets manager since Bobby Valentine
Joe Benigno has been pleasantly surprised with the Mets' performance so far this season, and one of the main culprits is the manager, who he says has been an A+ in his first season.
"I love Carlos Mendoza. I love the guy," Joe said. "The fact that he was able to keep this team rolling when it looked like they were dead in the water…I give all that credit to Mendoza. I think he's done a great job.
"My only knock on Mendoza, the only thing that's bothered me so far, was not defending Edwin Diaz more when he got suspended. Where was Mendoza out there screaming about it?"
Mendoza has the Mets fighting for a playoff spot as September approaches, and Joe says that should be celebrated given how the season began, with New York losing its first five games of the season and falling to as low as 11 games below .500 in May. The season could have spiraled from there, but instead, the Mets have fought back, and Joe says that is a reflection on the job the manager has done.
"I think he's the best Mets manager since Bobby Valentine," Joe said. "I think he's really been great, and he has this team playing really good baseball."
