Tyrone Taylor enjoyed another multi-hit game in Thursday’s Mets win over the Rockies, the fifth multi-hit game for Taylor in his last 11 starts.
In that span of 14 total games, Taylor is batting .326 with an .895 OPS and five doubles, furthering Joe Benigno’s case for the outfielder to remain in the starting lineup when Starling Marte returns from injury.
“Tyrone Taylor has been phenomenal for the Mets,” Joe said. “If you’re watching the Mets every day, how good has this guy been? Offensively and defensively.
“When the ever-injured Starling Marte comes back…are you gonna tell me that we’re gonna take at-bats away from Taylor and Bader to play Marte? Really? Why?”
Marte homered for Port St. Lucie on his rehab assignment Thursday night, and has been working his way back from a knee injury that has sidelined him since late June. The 35-year-old has had his share of injuries since signing with the Mets, and Joe would prefer to continue to give Taylor the bulk of the at-bats.
“I’m sure they’re gonna probably do that because he’s still under contract and making decent money, but Tyrone Taylor’s gotta play,” Joe said. “I’m sorry.”
