Joe Benigno is of course a Mets fan, but he was also on our airwaves for over a quarter-century giving his takes on all New York sports – so when he joined Tiki & Tierney Monday to talk mostly Jets, BT had to ask if he agreed with him that Aaron Boone’s job may be on the line tonight.
“I’m surprised he’s survived this long, to be honest with you,” Benigno told BT. “This team has to get to a World Series at some point. If you crap out against the Guardians, how does he survive? How many years in a row have they made the playoffs and crapped out? Say what you want about Joe Girardi, he won a World Series in 2009. I understand with the Yankees it’s only one, but it’s the only one you’ve won in 22 years now.”
Joe then wondered how much longer Brian Cashman gets, asking ‘does he have a lifetime job or what?” before BT chimed in.
“Brian Cashman is very competent at his job, to be fair, but you can make the case his time here has ended as well, but they don’t seem inclined to move on from anybody.”
Joe agreed with all of it, but then cautioned that while it doesn’t mitigate the Yankees’ failure, the postseason ain’t what it used to be.
“Three 100-win teams in the National League are all gone…who had the Padres playing the Phillies in the NLCS?” he asked. “It’s very difficult to win the World Series anymore with all the rounds they have to get through in the playoffs. And why are they still playing 162 games with all these rounds of playoffs?”
Tiki even had to chime in and note that for all the effort to win the division, three of the six division winners were knocked out in one round so far, and the Yankees could be the fourth.
“All year long, all we ever talked about with the Mets was ‘you have to win division’ – no you don’t!” Tiki said. “The Phillies were third, and they’re in the NLCS.”
We’ll see what Monday night brings, although even if the Yankees do win?
“They ain’t beating Houston,” Benigno said. “Forget about it.”
