Joe Douglas: Jets are not giving up on Denzel Mims

After making just three starts, eight receptions and costly penalties in a disappointing sophomore season, has the ship sailed on Denzel Mims?

Jets general manager Joe Douglas says absolutely not.

“I wouldn’t say that at all,” Douglas told reporters on Wednesday.

Placing the bulk of the blame on Mims’ poor season on injuries and illness, Douglas is ready for the former second-round pick and once-promising rookie to get back on track in year three, and be another weapon for Zach Wilson and the New York offense.

“I know Denzel is attacking this offseason,” Douglas said. “I know he’s in great shape. I’ve had great conversations with his agent. I know he is working his tail off and I know he's excited to get back here for OTAs and compete with the rest of his teammates.”

Mims’ Jets future seemed to be in doubt at the end of the regular season, when he didn’t see a snap against the Buccaneers despite a painfully shorthanded receiving core due to injuries and COVID-19 cases. Mims dealt with food poisoning and COVID-19 himself throughout the year, and Douglas still seems to believe that the 24-year-old will get his career back on track.
