John Minko joined Evan and Tiki for the special Throwback Thursday episode exclusively on our AM dial, and began his spot by giving a 20/20 sports flash, for old time’s sake.
“With reports every 20 minutes, or 20 years, this is John Minko,” the Mink Man said.
Evan had to point out a crucial mistake from Mink, who said the Nets were leading the Cavaliers by 14 points in Paris, when in reality, they were losing by that amount.
“I’m a little rusty,” Mink laughed, before raving about the turnaround of St. John’s basketball under Rick Pitino, who led the Red Storm to another Big East win on Wednesday night with a narrow victory over Providence.
“Rick Pitino has done an incredible job,” Mink said. “Turning the program around not in years, but in a few months. It is incredible what is going on in Queens.
“The crowds are up from recent years, and it’s amazing how he built this team. He kept two players…and went out and recruited scorers. Veteran grad students and scorers, many of them from losing programs…what he had to do was teach these players how to play defense. Teach some of them how to pass the ball and do the other things, and more importantly, what things you need to do to win.”
