John Sterling is getting set to call the Yankees’ playoff run, which will mark the end of his iconic broadcasting career as he heads off into retirement.
His illustrious career now also includes a notable nomination.
The Baseball Hall of Fame announced Tuesday that the radio voice of the Yankees has been nominated for the 2025 Ford C. Frick Award, which is presented annually for “excellence in baseball broadcasting by the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum.”
Sterling is among 10 finalists that also include Mets TV announcer Gary Cohen, Skip Caray, and Dave Sims.
Sterling’s broadcasting career in the Bronx dates back 36 years, being behind the microphone for five World Series championships, seven pennants, and other iconic moments such as Derek Jeter’s 3,000th hit and perfect games by David Wells and David Cone. Alongside Suzyn Waldman, Sterling became synonymous with Yankee baseball, and his “Theeeee Yankees win!” call at the end of each Bombers victory has become iconic in Yankees Universe.
The winner of the award will be announced on Dec. 11 at the baseball Winter Meetings in Dallas, and will then be awarded on July 26 of next year during Hall of Fame Weekend in Cooperstown.
