K’Andre Miller was ejected from Sunday’s Rangers-Kings game in the first period after he was deemed to have spat in the face of Kings defenseman Drew Doughty – an incident Miller said Monday was “completely accidental.”
“I have all the respect in the world for Drew Doughty and what happened was completely accidental," Miller tweeted Monday. "I would never intend to do something like that on purpose, it goes against everything I am as a person and player. I felt awful about it and I am thankful Drew gave me the opportunity to apologize and explain myself in person after the game."
Miller was given a match penalty in a game the Rangers eventually won 5-2, and as all match penalties are reviewed by the league, the NHL Department of Player Safety announced Monday that Miller will have a hearing for unsportsmanlike conduct.
Garnet Hathaway of the Capitals was suspended three games for a spitting incident in 2019, so that could be a possible guideline, but Rangers head coach Gerard Gallant said after the game he didn’t see what happened.
"I didn’t see nothing," Gallant said. "Obviously, it happened, I’m not saying it didn’t happen. The kid feels bad about it, said it was an accident."
