Keith: Giants should want no part of 'project' J.J. McCarthy at sixth overall

With the NFL Draft approaching, Keith wants no part of the Giants taking a “project” at quarterback in Michigan’s J.J. McCarthy with the sixth overall pick.

Keith says Big Blue has gone down that road before, and it hasn’t worked out.

“Do you want to go and get a J.J. McCarthy-type project where his ceiling might be Daniel Jones?” Keith said. “I don’t know if J.J. McCarthy is a surefire, guaranteed NFL star quarterback. If you’re picking at six, you need a star quarterback at that spot. Not a project. Not an if. Not a maybe.

“I know he had some intangibles…but they didn’t run that offense through them. He didn’t carry them to the national championship. That defense was a monster.”

McCarthy has been linked to New York via multiple reports, but Keith has faith that Joe Schoen won’t use a top draft pick on a player that is a major question mark, and would likely need more time to develop.

“I think the Giants are smarter than we’re giving them credit for, and they’re playing into this game too,” Keith said. “You’re not taking J.J. McCarthy at six when there are other talented players you can stash for later.”
