Keith Hernandez joined Boomer and Gio on Tuesday morning to preview the Mets’ massively important series with the Braves, which kicks off in Atlanta on Tuesday night to potentially determine who will be playing in October, and who will be going home.
Typically, Atlanta has been a house of horrors for New York, most recently being the site where the team’s painful NL East collapse was completed back in 2022. But Keith doesn’t see a similar breakdown happening for this Mets team, even if the same core is in place from that 2022 squad.
“I think this is a new group,” Keith said. “This is a new team that is fun to watch. They have all kinds of mojo going right now. They put a marker down by taking three of four against the Phillies.
“Don’t think that Philly didn’t leave town thinking that they’d have their work cut out for them if they met again in the postseason.”
Weather could play a major factor in this series, and Keith says it very well could impact scheduling, which would actually be a win for the Mets, who could bury the Braves with two wins this week.
“They’ve got to play these games. I’ve heard that the Mets might play a doubleheader [Wednesday], because Thursday is looking like a washout,” Keith said. “Which I think is good for the Mets, because it’s always hard to sweep doubleheaders. But they have to play these games and this series in chronological order at the end of the season, because everything is hanging in the balance.
“If they take two out of three, that’s it for Atlanta, and if Atlanta takes two out of three, they’re right back in it, one game back with three to play.”
