According to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Craig Counsell would welcome staying put with the Brewers if the team were to match the highest offer he received from another team.

Keith says that seems like a manager who wants to stay put, keep his family rooted where they’ve been for years, and not come to New York to manage the Mets.

“That’s a guy who I think doesn’t really want to come here,” Keith said.
“I don’t think he wants to leave where he’s at.

“He’s had success there. I don’t know what conversations he had with Stearns or Steve Cohen, but I just keep getting the feeling that the Mets need to hire a first-time manager. A new guy. Not an old guy, not a guy that was somewhere else.”

If Keith is right, and Counsell doesn’t take the Mets job, he says David Stearns and company should shift their focus to a first-time manager.

“You’re starting new, you’re starting fresh. Stearns, pick your own guy,” Keith said. “Just don’t do what the Yankees did and pick someone out of the TV booth…actually go get a baseball guy. I think Carlos Beltran is a good option. There are a lot of good options.”
