Luis Gil has been shut down for six weeks due to a high-grade lat strain, putting the entire first half of the 2025 season in serious jeopardy for the reigning Rookie of the Year.
Gil’s injury is the latest in many for the Yankees this spring training, and Keith McPherson says there is some real growing concern when it comes to the rotation and the team as a whole.
“Obviously, there’s some concern for this 2025 Yankees team,” Keith said. “It’s March 3, you already heard about Giancarlo Stanton...and Luis Gil, he’s gonna be shut down with a lat strain. You might wind up seeing Will Warren or Carlos Carrasco.”
The Yanks are trying to repeat as American League champions, and are already trying to get back to the World Series without Juan Soto. New York responded to losing Soto by upgrading the pitching staff, but there are already multiple question marks in that department with Opening Day just weeks away. Suddenly, the best part of the team’s roster has already become an issue in Keith’s eyes.
“There are a bunch of other obstacles in the way,” Keith said. “Juan Soto is the least of their worries now. They already pivoted...but the Yankees made this many moves to have this many holes?
“The rotation is not a strength anymore. I know it’s just spring training, but have you seen Carlos Rodon? Clarke Schmidt and his cranky back, he has to get going.”
