Tom Thibodeau: Evan Fournier frontrunner to start again for Knicks this season

Many are hoping to see more youth on the court this season for the Knicks, specifically one of the team's most promising youngsters in Quentin Grimes.

But those hoping to see Grimes as a starter in his second NBA season are likely to be disappointed.

When asked who the starting shooting guard will likely be to start this season, Tom Thibodeau told reporters that Evan Fournier is the frontrunner for the job.

"We need shooting," Thibodeau said. "The one thing I know is with Jalen and RJ and Julius, we have to put shooting around them. Mitch will put pressure at the rim, that's what will force defenses to collapse."

Fournier was a liability on the defensive end last season (an area of his game he says he addressed this offseason), but he evolved into one of the team's most consistent and reliable shooters in the second half of last season. But Grimes, touted as a sharpshooter himself, is coveted by the franchise and reportedly was not included in any potential trade packages for Donovan Mitchell. Still, despite likely not starting, Thibodeau has stressed that he puts more importance on who is finishing the game rather than starting, but it looks like Fournier will again be part of the starting five.

"Evan has proven - I thought the second half of last year he played very well - I think we have great depth at that position," Thibodeau said. "We'll see how everything unfolds."
