Kodai Senga is making sure he has plenty of wind in his sails to get through a 162-game season in 2023.
The new Mets pitcher told reporters this weeks that part of his routine when he is not on the mound includes blowing up balloons to help "maintain my body, maintain a good posture," via the New York Post.
It seemed to help on Sunday, when he made his Mets spring training debut and showed off his deadly ghost forkball and a fastball that reached the upper 90s.
The practice is seen as one that can improve lung capacity, which could help endurance, and, in the eyes of Senga, help keep other parts of his body healthy as long as he still has plenty of breath. So, in his free time, he will sit and inflate a balloon, let the air out, and blow it back up again.
Mets fans will hope it works, as Senga is the youngest pitcher in the rotation at 30 years old, and the rotation has already lost one arm for the time being after Jose Quintana suffered a ribs injury.
