Keith McPherson is the new evening host on WFAN, officially taking the airwaves just after 7 p.m. on Tuesday night to begin his tenure on 101.9 FM/66 AM – but as he did almost every time he was asked over the last few weeks, he opened his first show by reminding that he may be succeeding our former evening Schmoozer, but he could never replace Steve Somers.
"I'm thankful for the support and all of you here listening, and there's a lot to talk about tonight…but before I say anything else, I have to send a shout-out to Steve Somers," Keith said. "There's a lot of talk about replacements and his shoes being filled...I deaded that every chance I could, because you can't replace a guy like Steve Somers. That's a GOAT, an icon, a voice we can never replace; no one will ever take his place, but I'm glad to carry the torch and lead us into the future. All aboard Flight 66!"
Keith also showed some love to our former compadre John Jastremski, who also took some of Somers' evening and overnight slots over the last few years before departing WFAN this spring, and eventually having his spot officially filled by Sal Licata.
And with the welcomes and thank yous done, it was time to do what Keith does best: talk sports.
It was all about Big Blue in his first monologue, discussing the big news of the day that the Giants had fired offensive coordinator Jason Garrett.
"This is just the first domino to fall, and you have to destroy it," he said. "Sorry Giants fans, I know it's tough to hear from a Cowboys fan, but you have to start with Dave Gettleman, and when you get rid of the GM, usually, you have to get rid of the coach too. Garrett is the first guy to get chopped in what I think is going to be a while chop suey."
All Giants to start, but if you've ever listened to Keith, you know you're going to hear everything over his five hours (or so) every weeknight from 7 p.m. to midnight. You might even hear some family love…as evidenced by the fact that the first caller Keith took was "Taylor from Los Angeles," who turned out to be his younger sister Taylor calling in to send love from herself and Keith's mom!
Welcome to the FAN family, Keith.
