NEW YORK (WCBS 880) -- The Mets will opt for a new leader in the dugout for 2022.

The team announced Monday it would not pickup Luis Rojas’ option for the 2022 season.
“The entire Mets organization is grateful for the dedication and devotion that Luis has exhibited over the last two seasons as manager,” said Team President Sandy Alderson. “He has shown a great commitment to the Mets over many years in multiple capacities. These decisions are never easy, but we feel a change is needed at this time.”
The team offered Rojas the chance to stay with the franchise in an unknown capacity.
“In each and every position I held, striving for excellence was our daily mission. I will always hold the relationships and friendships, developed over the years, dear to my heart, and am forever grateful to have been able to wear the Mets uniform for so long,” said Rojas. “We live in a results oriented business, and am deeply disappointed for our staff and fans that we didn’t reach our goals this season.”
Rojas’ departure as manager comes after a disappointing 2021 campaign where his team went 77-85 after leading their division for much of the season’s first half.
Rojas only managed one full season for the team — the Mets went 26-34 under him during the pandemic-shortened 2020 season.
The 40-year-old was named manager after being in the Mets’ minor league organization for several years, and was the Mets’ quality control coach in 2019.
He was thrusted into the role of manager after the team moved on from Carlos Beltran before managing a single game due to his involvement in the Houston Astros’ cheating scandal.
