Mark Canha has been badly struggling at the plate since the start of the season, but his second campaign with the Mets reached a new low on Tuesday night, when he was pulled for a pinch hitter in the eighth inning with the bases loaded and New York trailing by just one.
Luis Guillorme struck out in Canha’s place to end the rally in an eventual 7-6 loss, but Canha wasn’t shocked by the move, given his production so far this season.
“Surprised isn't the right word. I wasn't surprised,” Canha said. “The at-bat in the seventh inning was pretty bad. It's the worst thing you can do in that situation and it killed the rally.”
In the seventh, the bases were loaded again when Canha’s spot came up, but Canha bounced into a double play, bringing in a run but wasting a rally where the Mets could have brought home a lot more.
“You can’t keep blowing opportunities and not coming through when we need to come through, and expect to get more and more opportunities,” Canha said. “Your opportunities are gonna shrink, obviously.”
Canha went 0-for-3 on the night, dropping his season batting average to .216 with a .657 OPS.
“I wasn’t surprised to get yanked. I wanted that at-bat,” Canha said. “I wanted it more than anything. But not surprised.”
