The Dallas Cowboys are massive favorites Sunday against the Giants. There’s no way they can lose.
Well, there’s probably no way they can lose.
Dallas is set to host a truly woeful Giants team at AT&T Stadium. Some sportsbooks have the Cowboys as big as 17.5-point favorites over New York, which will be trotting out Tommy DeVito at quarterback with Daniel Jones out for the year.
It would take a colossal meltdown for the 5-3 Cowboys to lose. But weird things can happen in the NFL – and you don’t have to go back to far to find a Cowboys loss against a bad team playing a backup quarterback. Two of their losses have come against NFC powers in the Eagles and 49ers, but the third was in Week 3 against an otherwise winless Cardinals team that was playing Josh Dobbs with Kyler Murray hurt.
Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy was asked Friday in his weekly appearance on Shan & RJ if the loss to the Cardinals was a reminder that Sunday might not be a cakewalk.
“Definitely. I think Arizona is an excellent reminder, but I think really when I look at this particular game – you remember last year, we were a significant favorite against Houston, we all know how that game came down to the end,” McCarthy said. “I think that’s just another weekly reminder that represents how hard the NFL is. We need to just really, really focus on ourselves. We want to improve from our last contest in Philadelphia, make sure we continue to grow. But at the end of the day, we need to go get this sixth win.
“I think the guys really practiced well yesterday, I was very pleased with the practice. The ability to have a healthy week of preparation gives you a chance to get off to a great start on Sunday, so that’s our mindset.”
