McMonigle believes David Stearns would prefer to move on from Pete Alonso, but Mets need him

Pete Alonso continues to remain a free agent, with little indication that a solution is near.

The first baseman could become the most accomplished position player in Mets history if he stays in Queens, and still hit 34 home runs in a “down year” last season, while sending New York to the NLDS via one of the most memorable home runs in franchise history. So, why is it taking so long to bring him back when he seems to have very little interest elsewhere?

Chris McMonigle is starting to believe that David Stearns would prefer to move on from Alonso.

“I wonder where Steve Cohen is,” C-Mac said. “I honestly believe - I don’t know it for a fact - but my thought is that David Stearns would rather have him not sign here...he’s just not willing to budge because it’s kind of negotiation against himself, he’s in the power situation...but I honestly believe that David Stearns would rather Pete Alonso get another deal and tell him to go take it.

“He’s on the wrong side of 30 and been trending down the last two years...I think they would rather him move on. But where is the owner on this?”

Cohen is armed with more riches than any owner in baseball, by far, so amid reports that Alonso brought a short-term offer exclusively to the Mets earlier this month, he doesn’t see why Cohen wouldn’t step in and just get the deal done. Not only because it would satisfy the fanbase, but because C-Mac believes the Mets badly need Alonso’s bat in 2025.

“The guy hits 40 home runs in his sleep. Bring him back,” C-Mac said. “Three years, bring him back. You can still get Vladimir Guerrero and do the things you want to do. I’m on board. I’m trying to win a World Series this year.

“It’s hard to make a case for them winning a World Series without Pete Alonso. They could use him. I just have a feeling that the GM doesn’t want to.”
