The wheels fell off the Yankees’ apple cart in the seventh inning of Game 1…with a little help from one of the Mets fans in the crowd of 42,714 at Yankee Stadium.

With the bases loaded and one out and the score tied 5-5 in the seventh, Lucas Luetge threw a slider that pinch-hitter Jose Peraza laced to left field; Tim Locastro gave chase, but then the ball just disappeared – into the mitt of a Mets fan wearing a Francisco Lindor jersey, who reached over the wall from the front row to snare the ball:

Locastro did not appear as if he would make the catch, and even if he did, it would have been at worst a sac fly that gave the Mets a 6-5 lead. Umpires conferred as Peraza and the Mets rounded the bases, but quickly awarded him a fan-interference double, which scored two and made it 7-5.

Unfortunately, it was not a “break” for the Yankees, as Brandon Nimmo laced a two-run single, advanced to second on the throw, and then scored on a Lindor single to make it 10-5.

The Yankees began the inning with a 5-4 lead, but Aroldis Chapman allowed Pete Alonso’s game-tying solo homer to lead off the inning, then hit Michael Conforto and walked Jeff McNeil to put two on. Luetge allowed a Kevin Pillar single and then struck out Tomas Nido before Peraza’s heroics.
