The reactions are pouring in when it comes to Buck Showalter’s decision to ask the umpires to check Joe Musgrove for foreign substances, and Gary Cohen had a fairly notable one.
The Mets TV play-by-play announcer clearly didn’t care for Showalter’s strategy, calling it “fairly embarrassing” after the Mets were bounced in the winner-take-all game three on Sunday night.
“Buck Showalter is completely within his right to ask the umpires to check a pitcher for foreign substances,” Cohen said. “I thought, considering the circumstances…it smacked of desperation.
“It was fairly embarrassing for Buck to do that in that spot. It was not necessary. As it turned out, Musgrove was not cheating. I think if you’re going to pull a stunt like that, you better be right, and Buck was not right.”
Strong words from Cohen, but many across MLB Twitter agreed with that sentiment.
