Buck Showalter can't believe Stubby Clapp wasn't disciplined for Pete Alonso takedown: 'Nothing? Really?'

Major League Baseball dished out its punishments on Thursday for the benches-clearing altercation between the Mets and the Cardinals during Wednesday's series finale, and St. Louis first base coach Stubby Clapp wasn't among those disciplined.

Clapp wasn't suspended, or even fined, after he appeared to take down Pete Alonso from behind after the benches emptied in the bottom of the eighth inning, when the first pitch from Yoan Lopez was high and tight to Nolan Arenado. Cardinals pitcher Genesis Cabrera, who looked to pull Alonso down from behind along with Clapp, was suspended one game, while Arenado received a two-game ban.

But the absence of a suspension to Clapp seemed to shock Buck Showalter.

"Clapp got nothing? Really?" a stunned Showalter said Friday before shaking his head in disbelief before walking away from his pregame presser. "Glad you didn't ask me about that. Okey dokey."

Alonso had some strong words for Clapp after the game, saying he should have tried to restrain him "like a man" during the altercation that stemmed from a hit by pitch to J.D. Davis' ankle in the top half of the inning, bringing the Mets grand total of HBPs to a league-leading 19. Fifteen of them, by Showalter's count, have come at the shoulders or above.
