The Mets are calling up top prospect A.J. Ewing in an effort to spark their dormant offense and save a season that is currently on pace for 100 losses.
Ewing, the organization's top position player remaining in the minor leagues, has had a brief stay in Triple-A and made the most of it, batting .326 with three doubles in 12 games. Ewing began the season with Double-A Binghamton, where he his .349 with two home runs in 18 games.
The 21-year-old has mainly played center field this year, though he does have experience at second base as well. The former 2023 fourth-round pick boasts plus speed and a strong glove in the outfield, though the Mets could use an offensive spark more than anything else at this point.
The team is dead last in baseball in OPS as key contributors like Francisco Lindor, Luis Robert Jr., and Jorge Polanco are all on the injured list, none expected to be short-term absences. New York will enter Tuesday night, Ewing's first as a major leaguer, with the worst record in baseball.
The 21-year-old has thrived in his brief stint in Triple-A, and the Mets need a spark.
