Gary Sanchez is making his return to New York.
According to multiple reports, the former Yankee All-Star is being called up by the Mets, and will be active for Friday’s game against the Guardians. New York will need to free up a spot on the 40-man roster to be able to promote Sanchez, who signed a minor league deal with the club earlier this month.
Friday marked the deadline for the Mets to call up Sanchez before the catcher was allowed to opt out of his deal, which he did earlier this season with the Giants, when he signed a minor league deal before struggling in the minors.
Sanchez, a two-time All-Star with the Yankees, is no stranger to New York and heavy fan criticism, as he became a polarizing figure in the Bronx after a historic rookie season in 2016 and a 2017 encore that garnered MVP votes was followed up by a dramatic downtick in offensive production, while his susceptibility to passed balls was much maligned by the fanbase. After looking like the best offensive catcher in baseball through his first two seasons, Sanchez has hit below .200 over his past three seasons.
